Weather: dull and grey but with a hint of clearing

Today we headed just north of Lons-le- Saunier to the village of Baume-les-Messieurs. We were in for a great day. We drove past the Lac de Chalain stopping at a number of viewpoints. In sunshine it would have looked spectacular. We continued on to Baume-les-Messieurs by now the sun was starting to appear. Before descending into the village we stopped at a viewpoint. We discovered that the village was located in a spectacular box canyon. Descending into the village we found a beautiful waterfall, an abbey and a charming village. We spent an enjoyable couple of hours exploring the village.

We then continued to Chateau-Chalon another village which sat on a hill surrounded by vineyards overlooking the Revermont Valley. The village did have great views but didn’t have the charm of Baume-les-Messieurs.
