Today we headed over the Grimsell Pass. This time there no fog and the views of both the man-made lakes and mountains were excellent. It surprised us how much we hadn’t seen on our first drive across the pass. When we got to Gletsch this time we went right towards Brig. We stopped at Eggishorn and debated whether we went up to the Aletschgletscher -the glacier but neither of us were in the mood and it was expensive to go up.
We continued along the road past Brigg and then to Visp and decided we would explore the road up to Saas-Fee. We would have liked to have gone to Zermatt but that would have required a train journey from Tasch.
Saas- Fee is a car free (but had electric little trucks everywhere) village, mainly for skiing. We enjoyed a walk around the village particularly its collection of original hay huts.
We then headed back to Visp and then took the road to Goppenstein to take the car train back to Kandersteg. This was an experience in itself. The carriages are open. You drive your car onto the train and then the train takes you through the mountain tunnel. It was very dark going through the tunnel. The Channel Tunnel train is very refined compared this train but this was very efficient and saved a lot of miles.
