|Well we have seen many amazing places on our journey so far, but Palenque and Aqua Azul really take the cake. To get to these sights, we drove from the coast up to the high mountains near the Guatemalan border. We stayed in the mountain town of San Cristobal De Las Casas. The town is nestled in a pine forest 7,000 feet up. It was absolutely beautiful. The weather changed with the altitude and for the first time we had to put a thick coat and jeans on. It was a nice change. The town had a lovely European feel to it. The streets were narrow and were filled with little cafe's, artsy shops, and international restaurants. We really had a great time here.
The next morning we boarded a guided tour of Mexico's largest system of waterfall and the spectacular ruins of Palenque. These sights are on the coastal plain near the Gulf of Mexico and were the heart of the Mayan empire.
The rivers were an unbeliveable shade of blue, they almost looked fake. They cascaded down cliffs and weaved in and out of the jungle. And Palenque was truly amazing. The 1000 year old + ruins are very well preserved and look magical with the dense jungle background. It is hard to imagine how advanced this civilization was, one can only speculate what caused their demise.
This place was so amazing! We recommend it to everyone!
