The Train

Hi All,

Three nights at beautiful Airlie Beach went quickly then we headed off to Townsville. Not too much to do there but catch up for lunch with some friends and of course off to Magnetic Island (8kms off the coast) for THE lunch at The Marlin Bar which we humbly consider to be one of the best located bars in Australia. The lunch was of course Beef and Reef and was far too much food, of course accompanied by some liquid refreshment. Getting there was as follows bus, bus, ferry, bus and coming home the reverse so a lot of fun for the day.

Then we travelled to Cairns via lotsa road works about which we were well warned but we were probably lucky the delays were moderate. We stay in cairns at the Coconut caravan park the only 5 star park in Queensland and it has facilities second to none that we have seen in all our travels, we consider this to be the best park in Australia.

So far we have been for a trip into the city centre, walked the markets and marina and had lunch at the waterfront. Yesterday we went for an iconic day out here in Cairns by taking the Skyrail up to Kuranda and the Scenic Railway back down. The skyrail is a gondola type cable that some say keeps you close to the rainforest below but some feel it kept you closer to heaven, it is however spectacular and allows for 2 stops to walk in the rainforest. Kuranda is a bit (maybe a lot) alternative but an interesting place and of course lunch. The return by train is brilliant as the train crawls down a mountain range affording some beautiful views. The story of the construction of the rail line is very interesting and an amazing feat of engineering over 100 years ago.

Regretfully the weather for the last week has been dismal, warm but with isolated showers, and a lot of wind. Whilst it has not stopped us from doing what we want it is not what is expected in the tropics in the Aussie winter.

Luckily we still have 2 days here in Cairns.

So for now that’s all folks
