The northern part of New South Wales and the southern coast of Queensland are a subtropical paradise. The land is covered with green plants and the trees are filled with colorful birds like the lorikeet (looks like a colorful parrot). The ocean water is clear and warm and has a beautiful light blue color, not to mention some of the world's top surf spots.

We worked our way up to Byron Bay, a one time hippy hang out, that has been developed into a resort city. The area around here is stunning and Cape Byron is Australia's Eastern most point- so I guess we were as close to home as we have been in a while, just one long swim away! From there, an hours drive north puts you into Queensland, and home to many more beautiful beaches with nice white sand.

We decided to stay for a while in the Surfers Paradise area. We could be wrong, but to us this area of Australia is very similar to Miami. The people here seem to be tan and physically fit, there are lots of flashy cars, clubs and restaurants, and big mansions. And there are high rise buildings right on the white sand beaches. The most important difference is that there is a lot more surf here than in Miami! Our next stop will put us deep into the tropics!
