|Another nightmare bus driver - sometimes don't know if will make it out of this country alive! 3 hour trip into the central highlands turned into 9hr journey from hell...do not ask! Anyway, was worth the trip - Dalat is a beautifully situated town with lots of French colonial buildings and on a big lake surrounded by lush green mountains. We decided against doing any tours and hired two "easyrider" drivers to take us around and explore the surrounding area instead. We went right out into the countryside and saw waterfalls, mountains, hill tribe villages & local people (who kept shouting at us to protect our skin!) and of course lots of temples and pagodas. Such a good day and feel like got to see some of the "real Vietnam" as opposed to just the main tourist areas. We went to a silk factory and saw the whole process - from the worm in the cocoon to the final product (so obviously had to buy a few more souvenirs.. ! No more shopping from now on definitely..!) Our drivers Renee & Paddy were great - so knowledgable about the area, took us wherever we wanted to go & were very careful drivers! We stopped for a delicious lunch with a local family - prob the best food so far in Vietnam - the food has generally not been that good here really compared to Thailand standards anyway - apart from the amazing seafood which they can do very very well..so need to get back to the coast for that!
