Today was our day trip to Juneau. We were picked up at the small boat harbor around 8:45. The boat came from Skagway so it had a passenger load before we went aboard. On the way we saw whales, dolphins, eagles and sea lions. Thank goodness the boat was enclosed as it was another cold rainy day. You will certainly notice by the cloudy wet pictures we took.
A tour bus picked us up at the Harbor and took us to town. He drove us through town and gave us a quick tour so we could decide what to do with our time there. We were suppose to have 3 hours. By the time we got off the bus we only had 2.5 hours. We decided we would head to the capitol building. We went on a 30 minute tour of the capital. It was fun actually see the chambers and offices along with the history of Alaska.
We left the capital and walked down Franklin street which had a lot of shops and restaurants. We walked through a couple shops that were actual native crafts and art. We saw some real fur Mukluks. Thank goodness boots are not a necessity in Phoenix. They are very expensive.
We had lunch at the Red Dog Saloon. It would have been fun to hang out if we had the time. We ate and had to get back to the bus which took us out to the Mendenhall Glacier. It had to be one of the biggest we have seen. I think we are glaciered out!
If we could do it over again we would have taken the fast ferry and spent the day in Juneau. We were rushed and in the crowd of 3 cruise ships.
