Today drove north through the college town of Marlborough to the Avebury World Heritage sites. The two main sites visited were Silbury Hill and the Avebury Henge and Stone Circles. Silbury Hill is the largest man-made prehistoric mound in Europe. The height and volume compared with the Egyptian pyramids. It was built across 100 years around 2400BC but it is unclear the purpose of the hill.
The Avebury Henge and Stone circles was impressive. The henge was built and altered between 2600BC and 2400BC and encloses an area of approximately 25 acres with a bank and ditch. Walking around the site it was amazing to look down on the area.
