Here’s some of what the Lonely Planet – Australia chapter Melbourne - Victoria has to say about the Blue Penguins at St Kilda’s:
“Come to St Kilda for its briny breezes, seaside walking/running/roller-blading/cycling path, seedy history and for a good old bit of people-watching.
St Kilda’s palm trees, bay vistas and pink-stained sunsets are heartbreakingly beautiful.
The breakwater near the pier was built in the 1950s and is now home to a colony of over 1000 little penguins, they’re hiding there between the bluestone breakwater. Visit the penguins as the sun goes down (volunteers are on hand to shine a red light on them). If you’re taking photos of the little blue bundles don’t use your flash.”
