lower elevation - cactus and view of Tucson

Summerhaven General Store

What a terrific drive! Thirty miles of ess curves as the elevation increased by 6000 feet . The saguaro cactus eventually gave way to ponderosa pine . I stopped for lunch in a very small community called Summerhaven ( 8000 ft elev.) Had I made a right turn and continued on a different road I would have ended up at the Mount Lemmon Ski Valley - the southernmost ski area in the U.S

The road is a bicyclist's dream. I passed many, many of them on the way up and down. At the general store I asked one of the riders how long it took him to complete the trip and he said 2 1/2 hours up. I can't imagine peddling a bike for that long with that increase in elevation.

I have been to Tucson many times and each time I choose to do or see something new. For some reason this was low on my list and I now ask myself - why?

Driving the I10East is as boring a ride as ever. Made it to Las Cruces, N.M.
