We left the Badlands and drove to Rapid City today.
When we left at 10:30 am it was already 88 degrees. It made it to 110 in the badlands today. When we arrived at Rapid City it was 100 degrees. We took state Route 44 instead of the interstate. Very Scenic. It skirs the bottom of the Badlands National Park and goes thru Buffalo Gap National Grassland for half the trip (about 75 miles). Once in Rapid City after setting up we went grocery shopping.
So no pictures sightseeing today. A few pics about South Dakota thou. You need to understand-there are only 800,000 residents in South Dakota. Sioux Falls is at one end of Rt 90 and Rapid City at the other. There is a small town midway. Other towns have populations of 67, or 22. There are essentially no grocery stores anywhere but those 3 places. There will be a local gas station with a small convienience store and maybe a casino room and that is it. The town we stayed near in the Badlands had 67 people with one gas station, a small "grocery" in a small 20' by 20' building, a bar, a school, and a city jail the size of a small garden shed. Wall was bigger with Wall Drugs and lots of tourist trap stores-mainly old time photos, some motels and 3 gas stations. There was a subway in one station, but again-no grocery store. It was so nice finding a Walmart Supercenter 3 blocks away from the campground.
Anyway-Today pictures from the road (mainly).
I didn't get one of the metal sculpture-A skeleton of a man walking the skeleton of his dinosaur.
