Today we headed up Sugar Loaf Mountain in the Black Mountains of the Brecon Beacons NP. The Black Mountains are to the east in the park and not to be confused with the Black Mountain in the west of the park which we had visited the day before.
It was a bit tricky finding the parking area for our walk just outside Abergavenny.
We started by going through an ancient wood of oak trees before coming out onto the open heath land. We followed a ridge which had great views eastward over the Skirrid. We then had a steady climb up to the summit of Sugar Loaf Mountain (596m). The only drawback was there was no wind and there were a lot of flies which were quite annoying.
After having lunch at the summit (at least there was a wind so the flies were not a problem) we made a steep descent south from the summit and made our way through heath and farmland back to the car park.
A good walk except the flies!
