On the Road with Tom and Gloria travel blog


This summer was full of surprises. I got to do some fun things with the kids which is a special kind of joy. I also got to spend time with Colin in Chicago, friends in Milford, Milwaukee, and East Tawas. Stayed with Miho, Shigeki and Ryuji for a couple of weeks and it was interesting to watch them prep for his first year at the University of Michigan.

I had tea at a Russian monastery, went to the Motown museum ( 7th time !) and discovered lots of new Detroit restaurants and they were really good!

Towards the end of the summer, issues came up that needed to be dealt with immediately so I had to cancel my visits to family and friends on the east coast. Very disappointing BUT I have to make lemonade if you get my drift.

Tonight Owen and Spencer took me to Bacco for a celebration - happy trails dinner. Champagne glasses at our table should have been a clue but I was blown away when the sommelier brought over a bottle of Salon - my favorite. That was just the beginning of an evening filled with delicious food from start to finish . Burrata cheese with home grown heirloom tomatoes, brussel sprouts with pine nuts, golden raisins and pecorino cheese, pasta with truffle oil and porcini mushrooms, branzino with grilled zucchini, crispy potatoes and heirloom tomatoes, veal chop ( incredibly seasoned) with polenta, veal saltimbocca with a medley of fresh garden vegetables and to top it off the best profiterols with chocolate sauce EVER and an amazing cappucino. What a treat! A true celebratory meal. Love those boys!

Tomorrow I head southwest.
