After a day of rain on the Wednesday, Thursday morning was warm but very misty. We decided that despite the weather we would head out. From Baden –Baden we took the Merkurbergbahn or funicular to the top of the Merkur at 668m. This was the first time Daisy had been on a funicular but as usual anything that moved was fine by her particular as the lady at the kiosk had given her a treat!
The view from the top was mist, mist and more mist! Finding our trail we started our walk. The mist gave the forest a mystic feel. As we went lower the mist started to lift and we got views over Baden-Baden. The later part of our walk took us along the Panoramaweg (A 43 km hiking trail that encircles Baden-Baden) and along by the wild park where we saw deer in one of the enclosures.
Later we visited the ruins of Burg Hohenbaden also called the Altes Schloss. This was the 11th to 15th century seat of the Baden margraves and had been a ruin a long time – since 1597. As well as exploring the castle which sits high on a bluff, the castle provided excellent panoramic views over Baden-Baden, the Black Forest, and the Rhine plains. By this time the sun was starting to shine.
