Days like today are why I love to be on the road. Before leaving the Las Vegas area this morning, I went on a 2 hour tour of the Shelby American factory and museum. Mustang and Shelby Cobra fans flock here. Our guide worked with Carroll Shelby from the early years and he knew everything. He told us about Carroll's early years, his attempt at chicken farming, his war exploits, and most of all his racing career. Carroll's first race was in an MG -TC! We learned about his "feud" with Ferrari, his alliance with Lee Iacocca at Ford and how the Shelby Mustang came to be built. The pact between Ford and Shelby ended in 1970 when the government started looking at fleet fuel efficiency. Shelby American makes a limited amount of their hand made cars and they sell from $250,000 and up. Definitely collector's items. In 2006, Ford teamed up once again with Carroll Shelby to make a new Mustang. This is a very long tour and if you don't truly love cars you can get blown away by all of the engine techno-speak. I just loved looking at the sleek race cars and the fabulous Mustangs and Cobras. I also enjoyed watching the men in the shop repair and rebuild Shelby's from all over the country.

I left Shelby American at 12:45 and headed north to the 42,000 acre Valley of Fire State Park. Only an hour from Vegas and soooo worth the drive. My pictures DO NOT do this park justice. I am in love with red rocks and these didn't disappoint. The jagged eroded red sandstones date back 150 million years. Lots of examples of limestone and shale rocks as well. Unfortunately, I missed one of the most famous rocks here - elephant rock. I simply never saw the sign. This is a gem of a state park. Put it on your to see list next time you are in Vegas.

Arrived in Mesquite this evening and will spend Easter weekend with Jane and Jim. They promised to show me around the area so I am charging my camera battery to be ready for any wonderful thing I see.
