Road to Grand Canyon

Colorado River Gorge

Elk Crossing

An absolutely fantastic day! We drove to the Grand Canyon via Oak Creek Canyon, the Painted Desert ( not the right time of day for great color), Colorado River Gorge overlook and Desert View. We lunched at the Bright Angel Lodge and boy did that bring back memories. When I was 17 I stayed at the lodge and did the mule trip to the bottom of the canyon. I lived in Brooklyn at the time and had never been " in the saddle" before. Going down wasn't bad except I had the canteen on the sunny side of the mule so when we reached our destination and had a boxed lunch my water was practically boiling. I cried the whole way up to the rim even after being reassured by our cowboy guide that he hadn't lost a person yet. Today, after all these years, the memory came flooding back.

We have been so fortunate with the weather. It was a bit windy but still a gloriously sunny day. We couldn't believe our good fortune to see about 10 elk on the side of the road. Slowly they began crossing the street and we had an up close view.

The canyon is as breathtaking as ever. That's really all that one can say about it. Not too many visitors this time of year so we really had the run of the place. The only thing we missed doing was an IMAX movie about the canyon but oh well- we were seeing the real thing!

We were exhausted by the time we got back to the condo. We finished all the leftovers in the fridge and called it a day - A really great day!
