The Capper Nomads Europe Adventure travel blog

Today we visited the Back to Backs in central Birmingham. The Birmingham Back to Backs are the last surviving back to backs in Birmingham. (The rest having been demolished by the early 1970’s) They are examples of the thousands of similar houses that were built, literally back to back, around courtyards, for the rapidly increasing population of Britain's expanding industrial towns. Our very informative guide took us through a journey in time from the 1840s through to the 1970s as we explored the 11 houses. It was a fascinating visit seeing how people lived in one up and one down houses and how condition changed over the years.
