Kaikoura meaning 'to eat Crayfish' in Maori is a quiet little town on the East Coast which is pretty much kept alive by tourists coming to see the whales, dolphins and seals that inhabit the (sea) area. Seeing as I'd done swimming with dolphins in Paihia and had seen whales in Sydney I didn't do any of the activities, preferring to have a stroll through the town with some friends and relaxing in the hostel. Later on, when I realised the sun was out and I shouldn't waste a nice day I had another walk, this time by the beach and through the war memorial garden where there are arches made out of the ribs of whales from when Kaikoura was a whaling and sealing station.
