East Overlook- best views of battlefield

Elkhorn Tavern

Woke up to sunshine! Finally an opportunity to go to Pea Ridge - site of one of the largest Civil War battles west of the Mississippi. In 1862 this battle saved Missouri for the Union. Thunder in the Ozarks , a movie shown in the Visitors Center, is a must see before driving the 7 mile, 10 stop road tour.

Besides being a Civil War Battlefield, it is part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. In 1987, the U.S government designated the primary land and water routes of the Cherokee "removal" as The Trail of Tears . At the first stop on the driving tour, you can still see some shallow depressions in the ground - remnants of the road that Cherokees and other Indians walked( 1838-1839).

The Elkhorn Tavern was used as a field hospital for both Union and Confederate wounded (the present building is a reconstruction).

I spent nearly 2 hours at Pea Ridge and then it was time to take care of business. I got the tires rotated and inflated, filled my window washer fluid container and found a place to get a haircut. I am ready to move on.
