The beach at Hervey Bay (1)

The beach at Hervey Bay (3)

Having had our fill of sunsets, we now rather like clouds

We drove up the coast 3.5 hours from Brisbane airport (after seeing Olga off) past the turn off to Australia Zoo (easy to spot due to lots of huge hoardings with Steve Irwin on them) and the Glass House Mountains (so called by Captain Cook in 1770 as they reminded him of glass furnaces in Yorkshire). Hervey Bay was really nice, great beach, good weather and cheap accomodation. We found ourselves a unit for AU$50 a night with sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. It was great to be at our new home whilst waiting for our Fraser Island Trip on Monday, relaxing, going for a swim (beach safe here - no stingers (jellyfish) or sharks to worry about), relaxing, cooking for ourselves, oh and relaxing some more. Still solid.

Hervey Bay also has a really strange occurence at 6:20 p.m. each night for 10 minutes. Just as the sun sets the sky turns black with thousands of fruit bats flying from their day roost to where they feed at night. It was truly spectacular. Unfortunately the photos didn't come out.
