The Basha family, owners of one of Arizona's largest grocery chains, opened an art gallery in 1992 at their corporate headquarters in Chandler. What an amazing collection. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, with a few exceptions, and is free to the public.

When Eddie Basha's parents were starting the business and working long hours, Eddie was left in the care of his Aunt Zelma - an artist. When Eddie graduated from Stanford University (with a degree in History) he joined the family business, married, and started a family. Aunt Zelma encouraged him to develop a hobby - especially one that supported the arts. He combined his passion for history , particularly history of the American West, with his appreciation of art and began collecting. According to company info, Eddie bought his first painting in 1971 and hasn't stopped since. There are over 3,000 pieces of art displayed - some donated by other collectors.

The gallery is made up of two distinct collections - Western American Art and Native American Art. I spent hours looking at the huge collection of paintings, baskets, pottery, bronzes and jewelry. Photos were allowed so I took pictures of some of the things that made me pause. There were so many that after a while it dawned on me that I would end up with a catalog if I continued to photograph them all. What a find - I am so grateful that Mary Jane and John told me about this place.

On the way home I spotted a Costco so I stopped in to have my tires rotated. I was told that I should plan on buying new tires in the very near future. Why should that surprise me with all the driving I do. I will take care of that before I leave on my summer travels.

Had a long conversation with Owen tonight. He is getting over a cold ( flu?). All seems to be going well in Chicago.
