After leaving Bundaberg to Hervey Bay we stopped at the small fruit picking town of Childers. Childers used to be and still is a haven for backpackers cos of the fruit picking jobs available.
Back in 2000 there was a fire at the Palace Backpackers Hostel and 15 backpackers died there. Being backpackers ourselves we felt it necessary to pay our respects to those that lost their lives and so visited the memorial.
It's a fantastic memorial and really does everybody proud. There's a painting of the 15 backpackers and photo's of their lives- from birth to their last few days. There's cards and letters from loved ones in a folder and newspaper accounts of what happened.
We all felt pretty moved by this and were glad we made the effort to pay our respects.
God bless them.
We felt fairly drained by this, but continued the long journey to Hervey Bay so we would be their in time for our adventure. This was the gateway to Fraser Island and our very interesting trip.....
