Our boat on the Daintree River

Shervin and Brittany

The beautiful Daintree river

And one of its 'friendly' inhabitants!!

See the baby croc on the branch? Sooo cute

This is the car ferry across the Daintree - the only way...

I wonder what the effects would be if you ate the berries...

But it looks so inviting...

Braving the cold water at Mossman Gorge

Sheena and Britt cool off in the waters at Mossman Gorge

Well we have just had the best week with Brittany and her new boyfriend, Shervin, arriving in Cairns on the 19th. It is all over now and they have gone back to Perth so I will try to remember all we did with them!!

Day One - after arriving at Cairns airport at 5am they were collected by their hotel shuttle bus and taken back to their resort. It was too early to check in but the resort has a guest lounge where they were able to shower and then store their luggage. We then received a phone call to say they were ready to be collected. It was so lovely to pull up and see Brittany there and even better to be able to give her a big hug. We were introduced to Shervin (first time we had met him) and first impressions were good. We headed into town to have a much needed breakfast and coffee whilst Ken enjoyed showing Britt all the local points of interest in town. We then jumped in the car and after a bit of discussion it was decided that crocodiles were on the agenda for the day! We drove up to the Daintree River (approx 2 hour drive) giving us all a chance to catch up on each others news and for Britt and Shervin to catch up on some sleep. After a welcoming cup of Daintree tea upon arrival at the tour site we all climbed on board our boat very excited at what was to come. The Daintree is such a beautiful river and would be such a wonderful place for a swim - if it wasn't for it's local inhabitants. Our boat driver was very good at finding a few of the local crocs for us and we even had the bonus of him spying a baby crocodile on the branch of a tree - the very first sighting of this baby by any of the operators. The word was very quickly passed on so that all the other boats would find him too. He was so cute, but of course we had to remind ourselves that once grown we would have a very different view of him. We had such a lovely hour and a half cruise and it was great to have our first sighting of crocs in their natural environment rather than in a zoo.

On return to our car we then drove further on to the Daintree Village for a bite to eat then headed back to Cairns. On the way back we stopped in at Mossman Gorge as Brittany really wanted the opportunity to swim in a water hole. It took her a while to get wet due to the coldness of the water but she finally braved it with me following soon after (the boys stayed on dry land - too cold for them they said).

Back to the car feeling really refreshed after our dip and back to Cairns where we dropped the kids off at their resort. After we had all showered and changed we collected them again then headed into town for a $10 meal deal at Paddy O'Brien's - quite a tasty meal actually and really good value as it also included a glass of wine.

The kids were still in the mood to wander around town but us oldies were exhausted so we decided to leave them to it and we headed back to the van and bed.
