Another lovely day but with a nip in the air. We decided it was time to explore the nearby mountains although finding the right road was a bit of a nightmare for a start. Once we left the coastal plain our winding road climbed through forested hills of pine and eucalyptus passing small villages perched on hills with terraces along the hillside.

We came to the small town of Arouca which had a vast medieval convent and a pretty church on the town’s main square. We continued through the hills enjoying the views but with the lowness of the sun at this time taking photos was difficult and vast areas of hills difficult to capture.

We realised we had travelled a long way and time was getting short so we used the excellent motorway back to base.
