Today we visited Witley Court a spectacular shell of a colossal Victorian country house once owned by the Earl of Dudley the owner of many of the mines in the area. This was a complete contrast to the poor housing and working conditions of the mines employees. In its time it must have been magnificent and had many famous guests such as the future King Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson. The house was burnt down by a fire in 1937 and was never rebuilt. Today it is owned by English Heritage who are in the process of restoring the once magnificent gardens.
We enjoyed exploring the grounds, the church and the ruined house – the place had an eerie beauty.
