Adios Panama, Fredrik & Central America - yes I have been crying!

From Costa Rica we crossed over the border into Panama with no problems...well it was a problem for me trying to cross over the very high and rickety old bridge that connects the 2 countries...nothing to hold on to and huge gaps in the bridge everywhere (not to mention being about 50m high above a river) and carrying all bags i had a slight vertigo attack half way over (well more than slight) and didnt think would be able to make it over...eventually the fact that everyone was laughing at me with no sympathy whatsoever and little kids just running past me i had to pull myself together and get across...not a nice experience! and now fred thinks am a total wierdo although i think i was very brave! :o)

A short bus and boat ride later (and another fight with a boat driver after again running out of money - this seems to keep happening to us at borders and we had to beg from a v nice Dutchman who lent us some dollars!) we arrived in the much talked about Bocas del Toro.

We spent a couple of days in the main town of Bocas, not doing too much apart from drinking beer and playing cards for hours waiting for the rain to stop. We took some bikes out and had a ride around the island and also had a go on a tandem which was a good laugh once we eventually got the hang of it without shouting at each other! Fortunately there were no injuries...

From Bocas we took a boat over to Isla Bastimentos - part of a National Park which has supposedly the best beaches in Central America, which I definitely agree with of what i've seen. We stayed in a really lovely little guest house which had a deck right over the water where we spent the best part of a week chilling out on hammocks in the sun. A very relaxing last week in Central America for me before I move onto South America where i think i'll be a lot more active and it will also be a lot colder so need to make most of the sun! ...we weren't totally lazy all the time - but did lots of walking around the island exploring & picnicking on the beaches...we took a boat trip out one day with a local guy who took us to all the best swimming and snorkelling spots around the national park - its all so beautiful here i love it ...he also took us to Zapatilla Cay which you can see from the pictures is pure beach i've seen so far on my travels & could've spent weeks a great last day all in all apart from the slight sunburn issue...!

But as ever, all good things must come to an end and it was time for me to leave and go back to San Jose for my flight to really excited about South America so thought i'd be ok leaving but when it time to actually say goodbye to fred and get on the bus i got a bit emotional and actually cried for first time since i left home ..we've travelled together for 7 weeks so was really sad to say goodbye, but also sad to be leaving central america as have loved (nearly) every minute of it....(also the thought of having to go back over that bridge into CR by myself was making me very anxious!)

Am sure south america will be just as good though, if not better, and really looking forward to the next adventure!

Favourite countries in Central America definitely Guatemala and Nicaragua...a must-see for everyone!
