|Indio, CA is the "Date Capital of the U.S." 95% of all dates grown in the U.S. are grown in this area. They are only grown in the desert because they need hot temperatures but lots of water. Each tree produces 200 to 300 pounds of dates each year. There are male and female trees, males produce the pollen which is then spread on the female which produces the fruit. One male tree can pollinate 50 female trees. The fruit is harvested September through November. DO you like dates? Can you come up with some ideas as to how you would use dates? Have you ever tasted a "date milkshake?" YUM!!! Do you know how they get water to the desert to keep the trees irrigated? We hope you enjoyed the treats from The California Date Administrative Committee, the Oasis Date Farm and Grandy and Grandpa.
