On the Road with Tom and Gloria travel blog

Oh the temptation to stop and enjoy the home of Ulysses S. Grant and the rest of the picturesque town of Galena, IL - but if I was to arrive in Chicago before rush hour I couldn't take any detours. That was the plan - and then came the orange cones. It seems the entire stretch of I90 - the tollway - is being resurfaced so we were down to one lane for most of the way. When I90 met up with I94 in Chicago ,it was bumper to bumper the entire 10 miles to my exit. It took two and a half hours to cross the state and another hour to go the last ten miles.

I met up with Colin and Owen, had a well deserved drink, and then came to Owen's new apartment. The place he rented when he first got to Chicago didn't work out . The new place is terrific and he is very happy here.

The cumulative stress of the day has finally caught up with me. I know I will sleep very well tonight. As tired as I am though, I have enough strength to pat myself on the back for completing my journey to as far north as Glacier N.P. in Montana and as far west as Lewiston Idaho and arriving back in Chicago without getting one ticket or being involved in one accident. On the other hand, I can't begin to count the paint chips on my fenders or the small dings in my windshield - the price I have to pay for life on , and occasionally off, the road!
