|We take the early morning ferry from the south Island up to the north Island which takes about 3 hours, and pick up a new and bigger rental car. The sun is out and its warm so we decide that the best bet is really just to head to the beach. There are numerous beach possibilities north of Wellington and we try a couple. At the first there is a row of cars parked right on the sand with people looking out over the water, and here we eat lunch (not in the car). Then we drive further and find a quiet and empty beach next to a marae (Maori village) and we lie in the sun and decide its probably time for ice cream. There are a couple of places we could try for ice cream but Frode decides its the town with the most letters that wins and its: Paraparaumu. Eventually we should find a place to stay and find a little apartment motel room in Otaki where we borrow the bbq. Otaki is where some of the shire was filmed, and there is a rumour of a sign where its says "welcome to Hobbiton". We like the idea of taking a picture of Frodo next to the sign, but still after an hour of driving cannot find it and have to turn around.
