|Did you enjoy tasting the oranges and avocados? The avocado is a fruit, not a vegetable. Which one did you guess? The beaches in southern California this time of year are warm, beautiful and uncrowded. With temperatures in the 70's, spending a day at the beach is a delight. While many of the beaches are sandy, there are a few that are rocky and have headlands which is where the sea life lives. It is fun to gaze into the tide pools at low tide and see how many creatures you can identify. How many different kinds of sea life can you name that live close to shore and can been seen at low tide? Do you know what causes low tide? How many times a day does low tide occur? We also went to the San Juan Capistrano Mission which was started in 1776 by Spanish Catholics. It has the distinction of being home to the oldest building in California still in use, a chapel built in 1782. Each spring, thousands of swallows return to nest in the eves and legend has it, that the swallows fly over 6,000 miles from Argentina to nest here. Do you know what the swallows eat? California's first vineyard was stated here. The main goal of the Mission was farming. Can you name some crops they would have grown back then to eat and what kind of animals they would have raised?
