Tane Mahuta - the biggest, oldest Kauri tree in New Zealand

It's 50 feet round the trunk and there's a whole ecosystem in...

Our time in the van is almost over so we head down the west coast of Northland back to Auckland. Not much to report except that this is Kauri country. The Kauri is a New Zealand native tree which grows very big and lives for a long time. They used to be widely spread but are now mostly confined to this corner of the country after excessive felling. We stop off to visit the biggest and oldest one called Tane Mahuta which is thought to be over 2000 years old.
