Team FroJo 2010 travel blog

From Franz Josef we have a long driving day up through the south Island. We unfortunately have only 10 days total before the wedding we will attend in the north Island, and of course want to see as much as possible en route. Driving north, we follow a winding coast road with steep drop offs on either side, and then east through a gorge and forests and eventually into the vineyards of the Marlborough wine region. We pick up some wine on our way through and then keep driving and by 7pm reach a small town called: Havelock. We park our car at the Marina and drink Naked Vine Sauvignon Blanc (which we search for several times afterwards) and then take a water taxi out along the sound (fjord) to a little backpackers called "Hopewell". "Welcome to heaven" we hear, as we get off the boat. Katie is in the dorms, and we have our own little private double room. There is a jacuzzi sitting on a platform with views out over the ocean, a huge spotless communal kitchen and living room and kayaks to rent and other activities. It is really glorious. Our first morning Katie heads off to use up some excess energy by cycling up a steep hill, while Frode and I lounge in the sunshine and then take the kayak for a paddle and lounge on that, looking out at all the jellyfish.

The afternoon is for the jacuzzi and bouncing on the trampoline, and then dinner is an excessive affair with mussels, home made bread, steak, fish, corn on the cob, potatoes and avocado salad followed by an enormous serving of pavlova (to die for). After our first day high, we wake up on day 2 to gentle rain. The plan was, of course, to cancel all previous plans and stay forever, but the rain motivates us to keep moving and so we take the water taxi back to Havelock. Here we cross paths with Jo´s parents again and so get to gossip and laugh about the adventures of the last few days!
