3/5 – 3/9

Three sea days and 1653 miles brought us to Singapore. Along the way we changed our dinner table to table 100. Our new tablemates were Eileen and Norman (from New Jersey) and Ans and Jorgen (from Ontario). We were also notified that we now have enough days traveling on Holland America ships (200) to be assigned 4-star Mariner status. What does that mean? Well, it means that Joan does not have to visit the ship laundromat anymore - we get our laundry done for free!

Singapore is probably the cleanest city we have ever visited. We purchased a two-day pass for the city metro which was good for both buses and subway. The subway was very easy to use and there was a stop right by where the ship docked. The places we visited during the two days included: Fort Canning (command center at the start of WWII), China Town, India Town and Arab Street. The amount of textile and fabric stores on Arab Street were unbelievable. We also took the metro to the Singapore Flyer. The Flyer is the world’s tallest Ferris wheel. It took us 30 minutes to complete one revelation. On the first evening in Singapore we took a ship’s tour called Night Safari. On the tour we saw a number of animals in their nightly habitat (or what the zoo considered their nightly habitat). It was okay. NOTE: On March 9, 2014 when we rode the Flyer it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world at 541 feet. However, on March 31, 2014 the High Roller was opened in Las Vegas and it stands 550 feet tall. Guess we need a trip to Vegas.
