Hoi An was a great place to relax. We didn't do a lot for a few days - wandering around the old town (no cars, bonus!)looking at the various pagodas, assembly halls and family chapels. The Vietnamese are very into ancestor worship, which involves worshipping ancestors at an alter or chapel and consulting them on big decisions. We visited the Tran Family Chapel which has an altar for ancestors statues going back 200 years. In the back garden they bury the umbilical cords of all new born in the family. This is so that all family members have a tie to the family home. And on that note, we will move onto the local cuisine.

The local food has a few specialities

- cao lau, flat noodles with croutons, bean sprouts, greens topped with sliced pork;

- white rose cake, steamed shrimp wrapped in rice paper; and

- fried won tons, filled with shrimp and pork.

This was handy as for some reason chicken was off the menu.

There are over 200 tailors in Hoi An, very cheap, good price, come to my shop. Sarah had a top made in Thai silk and we also bought some ceramics, a carved marble ball incense burner and a gong (always handy to have a gong you know).

We leave tommorrow by bus (again) for Hue. Still solid.
