Devils Marbles

We woke up in Alice this morning with pouring rain and had to pack up poor old Pumpkin in it. Put on our rain coats, did what had to be done, then changed into nice dry clothes to drive to Tennant Creek. The weather prediction on last nights news said that it would be sunny and 27 in Tennant so we figured the further we drove the closer we would come to the sunshine. WRONG!! It rained all day – all 500 odd kms making the driving very tense indeed. Going through the floodways was a bit scary as the car aqua planed a few times – would hate to see it in the wet season!! Was such a pity too as there were a few places we would have liked to stop at along the way but it was just too wet and miserable. We did manage to get out of the car very briefly at the Devils Marbles for a quick photo then a run back to the car before it poured again (The family we had chatted to at Standley Chasm were here too doing the same quick photo shoot as us).

Pulled into a weird roadhouse along the way called Wycliffe Well where it is reported there have been many UFO sightings. The roadhouse took this theme and ran with it as a decoration idea covering all the outside walls with paintings and cutouts of aliens. Very cute – would have liked to take a photo but it was pouring with rain.

By the time we pulled into Tennant Creek the rain finally stopped but was replaced with very strong winds. We put up our bed and let the wind do its work to dry it out and all our soaking clothes from this morning but soon had to bring the clothes in as they were getting covered in red dirt. Headed off to the ablution block and came back having made the decision that we would forgo a shower tonight. One poor lady had tried to have a shower and instead of the water going down the drain hole it was coming up every drain and every hand basin covering the floor in about an inch of water with red dirt and scum floating on top of it! First place we have encountered this – so far all ablution blocks have been clean and tidy. Just had a wash in the caravan instead of a shower tonight!

By about 7 the wind had died down so went over to the fire pit in the park where a local character named Jimmy did a bit of a show with bush stories and poetry. He also boiled up some billy tea and made a big damper in the fire. Found out late that he also doubled as the caravan park cleaner which helped explain the state of the toilet block!!

Freezing cold again this morning but at least not raining or windy. Getting sick of the cold - hope it starts to warm up as we head to Queensland
