Spectacular Rose Garden in Christchurch's Botanical Gardens

"It is going to be alright" sign on side of building

Modern Art Gallery coming in mid 2016

We discovered the gorgeous rose garden in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens today. These were more amazing than any we have ever been in and they were in their peak bloom time. We walked over there in the morning before getting Seth from the airport and then walked there in the afternoon to show him the amazing beauty as well. We passed a brand new Art Museum in the final stages of contruction - the whole city block in length modern building is all glass. Many of the buildings that are being constructed look to be in a modern style - it will be a very differerent looking Christchurch a decade from now. One of the big buildings being rebuilt is a large school that is circa 1887 - takes up a whole city block and is a key historical site. The signs showing the phases of completion suggestion that the challenging nature of restoration could make it a decade before it is completed. A touching neon sign on the side of a large building read " It is going to be alright" - kind of a big hug for the city that is wondering how it will recreate somethiing out of the rubble. There were three or four earthquakes identified between around a 16 month period 2010-2011 according to the sign on the renovation project we saw today. We are so thankful that Seth arrived fine after about 30 hours of ttraveling --FAI-ANC-HNL-Apia - Nadi - Christchurch. He handled it very well and got here just fine! We don't feel we want to spend 7 days in Christchurch so we are adjusting our plans and tomorrow we head for Dunedin for two days then Timaru - then adding a second day to the Kaikoura stay so the itineary has changed from that noted. Terry and I watched videos on driving on the left side of the road today - we have to take a little test with the rental company tomorrow!! More about that during tomorrow's post as we drive for 6 hours tomorrow :) 25,761 steps today!
