Gibson Guitar Giftshop

Beale Street

Arrived in Memphis just in time for the twelve o'clock tour ( $10) of the Gibson Guitar Company. No photos allowed, of course, but the prettiest guitars were in the gift shop anyway. It took 45 minutes for the tour guide to walk us through the process of making these instruments - 45 of which are made every day. Since I don't play the guitar , some of the technical stuff was Greek to me, but I enjoyed the tour just the same.

Beale Street was a block away so on the recommendation of the tour guide I lunched at The Pig. The BBQ was very tasty - the pork may have attitude but thank goodness the waitress didn't. I loved the guy playing the trumpet outside the restaurant ( hope you can see him in the photo) but , unlike Broadway in Nashville, his was the only music I heard on Beale Street. Maybe it was too early in the day.

When I got back on the Interstate to head to Little Rock, I passed St. Jude's Children's Hospital - a huge, modern complex of medical buildings. I forgot that it was located in Memphis.

Lots of driving today so I was happy to check into a hotel at 4:30. I'm going to stay here tomorrow to check out the Capitol, Clinton Library, and the Central High School National Historic Site. A full day but, I hope, a very interesting day.
