Vung Tau

Vung Tau

From HCMC we veer off the beaten track a little and visit Rio in Vietnam: Vung Tau. The town boasts a giant Jesus statue sitting on top of a hill and looking down over the ocean on one side and the town on the other. The walk up to the statue is absolutely gorgeous with small vistas looking out over the ocean at every corner and bright pink and white frangipani flowers. At the top the huge Jesus stands with his arms outstretched overlooking a small Mary statue just in front. We arrive 25 minutes before closing and are not allowed to take our bags up so we take it in turns. I (Jo) climb the 133 steps up inside the statue to come out onto his shoulders to look down at the wonderful views from the top. By the time I get down Frode has 15 minutes to have a look himself but the guard decides instead to shut the gate early and refuses to let him in. So we walk down again and around the waterfront promenade and drink beers and play pool in the evening in a bar with few customers but a good number of very beautiful young ladies. The town really could be a Rio miniature. Not only because of the Jesus statue; Vung Tau has long stretches of beach like Copacabana and Ipanema, and of course a cable car up to a sugarloaf mountain-look alike. They probably have a carnival too, but we didn't see any samba street parties...

The next day we leave for the beach in Mui Ne, and when we have to wait two hours for the bus, we head over to the hairdresser for a 2 dollar haircut!
