"Elephant" Relative?!

"Elephant" Relative?! Rock Dassie

Up..got the rental car, an Opel Corsa Lite(GM) & headed out for Hermanus where we lucked into 3 whales!! It's just the beginning of migration/calving season but a local fellow said these were the first sighted...very close to shore, so we didn't see Table Mtn. or Robben's Is. in the Cape but were very fortunate here! As we walked back to the car what should cross our path and begin to munch on the garden greenery but a Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis) or Dassie as they call them in S. Afr. (a Rabbit as locals call them), the small S.Afr relative of the elephant. First time I've seen one and here just a few feet away - really tame little fellow.

Put in a quick email to Arden (Wht Nights) and then headed up the N2 where we took off at Ladysmith to N62 and Oudtshoorn. Thru the Klein Karoo(small desert in Afrikaans) - magnificent scenery, high rocky peaks & great valleys w/ ostrich farms, cattle & sheep & huge wheat farms. Arr. in Oudt. & Oasis Shanti Lodge O.N. by 6...Sandi was very helpful, giving us insight into what to see & where plus a 10% discount card for an ostrich farm visit. S. Afr is exporting ostrich again(Oudt is the ostrich capital of the world!) so no eggs avail for breakfast - usually this time of year it only lasts a week but the demand is so high it's been this way over a month since it's breeding season & a premium on ostrich...meat has dbled in price.
