Speyer was founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago. It is one of Germany's oldest cities. Speyer is dominated by the Speyer Cathedral. In the Cathedral, beneath the high altar, are the tombs of eight Holy Roman Emperors and German kings. There is a legend about the eight men, as represented by the sculpture we took a picture of in the garden. The other sculpture is of the ferry-man on the river. The ferry-man was waiting for some business when he heard shouts from the other side of the river. He saw eight men who were calling him for a ride across the river. He went and got them and they paid him with some coins that he was not familiar with; so he followed them as then went toward the cathedral. When they got to the cathedral, they walked through the wall. He ran around to the front door and no one was there; only the eight tombs.
Doug and I came to Speyer when we were stationed in Germany with the US Army; nice little town.
This afternoon we're going on our home-hosted visit. On every trip, Grand Circle arranges for us to visit a local family so we can learn more about the people and the area. They always prepare a nice meal for us and plenty of wine.
It is a cold, rainy miserable day. Worst yet.
