We started the day off with a bus tour of part of the city to include the City Hall. The City Hall is quite impressive and very ornate. The Nobel Prize dinner is held here every year on December 10 the date that Alfred Nobel died. 1358 people are invited to the dinner to include the Nobel laureates and be king and queen of Sweden. One must show an invitation card in order to be admitted to the festivites. We then toured a little more on the bus and then were dropped off at the opera house to begin our own unescorted walking tour . What a long pedestrian mall near the parliament building and the Royal Palace. We then crossed a bridge to go to the Gamla Stan which is the old part of Stockholm. There are many shops restaurants ice cream shops souvenir stores and lots of people. We purchased a few small items and then we decided to take in the Nobel Museum which was very interesting and gave us quite a bit of information about Alfred Nobel and dynamite. We decided to take in the Nobel Museum which was very interesting and gave us quite a bit of information about Alfred Nobel and dynamite. On his death he left a fortune to be used to award a prize each year in physics, chemistry or science, medicine, literature and peace. The peace prize is awarded in Oslo and the others are awarded in Stockholm. Each prize comes with a gold medal and a 900,000 euro cash award. If two or three people share the award they also share the cash. After the museum we did a little more shopping and then went to lunch. After lunch we continued to explore the old town. Having satisfied ourselves that we had sufficiently explored the area we crashed another bridge onto the South Island where our hotel is located. Remember Starkel consists of 14 islands so there are many bridges and tunnels involved in traveling around Stockholm .We walked along the Gotgarten (sp?) Street and so many people enjoying meals and or beer and wine. Not wanting to feel left out and it being a bit warm we decided to stop for a beer after which we continued our walk all the way to our hotel. Our farewell dinner is tonight at 7 o'clock and hopefully we can give a full report after it
