Boat Trip to Village + Ganga (the Dog)

Leave for Lilongwe on boat from Mayoka Village at 8 am to town…waiting for bus til 9:45. Bus from Mzuzu is crowded, we jam into the aisles standing, our packs piled high. A French couple(Pascal & Silvie) come on as well. The sign just inside the door reads capacity 35 but that is the number just standing in the aisle I think! The driver goes like a bat out of hell, I think he feels that with so many on board if there is a crack up we will all be cushions for each other, like the Styrofoam padding in a box.

We are originally planning on going only half way, to Nkhotakota, but we finally get seats. Seeing this as the only bus heading S. and hearing that we should get to Lilongwe before dark Bon & I opt for heading the whole way, tho Bon still waits to pass judgement on the town once we arrive. Seeing that it is 1-2 km from the possible ON to the beach and is hot, hot she & I carry the day against Mari’s grumblings. I’m sure this is the only bus and we’d not get seats on tomorrows if they’d even let us aboard( the bus has passed many stops w/ people waiting due to the packed conditions). I also feel it is better to find one place to stay for 2 nites than have to pick up and move twice to 2 different places.

Just out of Nkhata Bay we passed by a huge rubber plantation, hundreds of acres of older trees. Further down along the coast we pass Dwangwa sugar plantation, another huge private operation between the road and lake, passing takes 10-15 km. Houses in countryside here are typically brick with thatch roof, or mud hut & thatch roof. The roads in Malawi have all been good, well maintained but narrow two laners.

The museum in Stone House tells of Livingston's death and how the black porters buried his heart beneath a sacred tree. They dried his body for 3 days, wrapped it in bark, and carried the remains hundreds of km to the coast where it was shipped back to England to be buried in Westminster Abbey. A lot more in the museum as well but this stood out most for me.

Ate breakfast at Bohemia Alley where it appears all the white folks go(we were the first there at 8), since w/in 30 min. it filled w/ PCVs and other assorted Anglos incl. Pascal & Silvie! Then across the street to the internet where I sit presently swearing at the slow upload of photos…3 in 45 minutes!
