| The weather again was grey and wet so we headed out towards Bangor hoping it would improve. We decided to visit Penrhyn Castle just outside Bangor as it was raining. This was an unusual castle. It looked old but in fact the majority of it was created between 1820 and 1840 to designs by Thomas Hopper. After a walk around the gardens with Daisy we then explored the castle. The inside of the castle reminded us very much of Hearst Castle in California as it was very elaborate and had a myriad of treasures and artifacts dating back hundred of years. The staircases were particularly elaborate. Our tour was enhanced by the audio guide which told the history of the castle from both the "upstairs" and "downstairs" perspectives. As we left the castle the skies open and remained wet for the rest of the day. We decided to drive through Bangor and find the famous Menai Suspension Bridge between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. The bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and was completed in 1826. The bridge crosses the Menai Straits and is 417 metres(1,368 ft) long. We decided regardless of the rain to walk across the bridge. |
