So much to do in Coromandel, so little time! The Coast around here has been made famous by a number of movies, including 'Chronlcles of Narnia - Prince Caspian', so we decided to stay close to Hahei and discover a little more about this lovely area. Our morning adventure was to take a one hour coastal cruise in a Zodiac - a semi-rigid inflatable boat - up and down the coast. Unlike our genteel sail on Lake Taupo, there was nothing serene about this trip! With a full load of 12 pax, lively seas and threatening rain, we roared off from Hahei Beach and made straight up the coast to Cathedral Cove.
There were many fascinating sights to see, from ancient volcanic rocks and islands, to the beautiful Cathedral Cove, one of the scenes in the Prince Caspian movie. We also explored the Coast to the South of Hahei and this included going into a couple of sea caves, which was a great experience. Our skipper, Grant, was great with his commentary and seamanship - he timed our trip almost to perfection between squalls - and gave us a very exciting, high speed (at times) trip. Even the pelting rain, which turned up just as we were finishing, did nothing to dull the experience.
We had hoped to visit Hot Water Beach, to wallow in the warm water that oozes through the sand, but low tide more or less coincided with our boat trip, so we had to choose. Ah, these tough decisions in life! Instead, we settled for a relaxing lunch in the villa - it was raining, anyway!
However, we can't sit still for long while on holiday so, as the rain eased in the afternoon, we decided to take the coast walk down to Cathedral Cove, to see it from the landward side. It is a pretty easy walk on - mostly - formed paths through the temperate rainforest. At several places there are great views over the many islands just off the Coromandel coast, made even better by the very nice sunset. All in all, we had an easy 1 hour walk, plus about 30 minutes on the beach, admiring the dramatic rock formations and chatting with random strangers.
After dinner - another DIY concoction - we packed up ready for Phase Two of our Kiwi Kaper, the South Island. We have had a fabulous time everywhere we have been on the North Island and wish we could have spent more time in each place, but of course that is not possible. Tomorrow, a drive to Auckland and flight to Christchurch.
