Mon 8.45am – outside the Underground Bookstore. Peter the mailman gave us all the low down on the big trip. We are off – over 600 kms of unsealed road, taking the Royal Mail to outback stations around Coober Pedy, Williams Creek and Oodnadatta. Well this guy never stopped talking – he was a mine of information, mostly about Australia and Australian explorers – all very interesting.

There were 13 aboard the OKA and it was like sitting on a ride at Adventure World averaging about 100kms an hour the thing shook and shaked and every time he hit a cattle grid made your stomach drop every 10 minutes or so.

We hit a few pubs along the way along the old Ghan railway line – can’t believe the land we traveled most, was one of the biggest stations in the world. While in Williams Creek we used the only $1.5 million phone in Australia to phone about the car. Found out that the starter motor wire and the battery plates had shaken themselves loose. He put a new battery in and tightened up the connections and Bessie is now ready to rock and roll again – whew!!

Got back into town about 9.30pm – a very long and a very interesting day – a trip never to be forgotten.
