Brisbane to Heron Island
Up early with bright sunshine flooding our room. Found breakfast in the Skygate complex opposite the hotel - smashed avocado and feta with smoked salmon on sourdough, very Australia! We visited the Woolworths to buy stuff for lunch and found the ‘Timtams’, a real reminder of our earlier trips. It was great to wander across in the warm sunshine, people greeting us as we walked, everyone is so friendly its almost like coming home - the jacaranda trees were in full bloom plus all the strelitzia, agapanthus, wattle etc., the butcher birds calling, just wow! It did feel good to be back.
Caught the airport shuttle bus, easy all-electronic check-in and bag drop, eventually found the gate, after walking past it twice!!
All looking good; going to plan so far......
Safe flight to Gladstone, a DeHavilland Dash 8 turboprop aircraft, didn’t see much of the coastline as the route was a direct line from Brisbane but the plane swung right over the ocean to line up for the airport. Beautiful blue ocean! Reading the in-flight magazine gave us ideas for our next visit to Australia.
Waiting for the shuttle bus Ruth checked her emails to discover her visa had been extended, phew, all smiles now. The bus dropped us at the harbour; checked in was a bit chaotic but eventually we got booked in anxd changed the booked dinner time from 5.30 to 7.30/8 - Australians do seem to eat early! It was a bit breezy, so the boat trip might be a bit bumpy, people were warned to take sea-sick pills if needed. Grabbed some lunch while we waited for departure at 2.
There is no wifi on Heron Island so we will report back in a few days.
