Preparation is Long and arduous. Last minute mechanical additions added to a smooth ride and a quicker cold start. We also had the sale of some property. That was miraculous,we had been trying to sell it for 2.5 years. One week before we are to leave we get an offer. Signing papers and hundreds of phone calls/emails/signature etc. Made for a very hectic week.
I wanted to especially thank the mechanics that got Paco/the Westy, fixed up for the trip. Paco has a new 2200cc water boxer engine from Go Westy. Nick and Alfredo at TNT automotive in Signal Hill installed the engine. Nick and Alfredo also swapped the old manual tranny for a reconditioned automatic. TNT also installed new beefed up springs for a much better ride.
Speaking of ride, Nate Jones and his son Nate set me up with some custom rear Bilstein shocks. With the Michelin tires and Bilsteins all around we really hug the ground and go through the bumps more smoothly. After a new wheel alignment with some new shims and upper and lower ball joints, turning is effortless.
So the engine and suspension is up to par. The interior has also been upgraded with new foam in the beds, and a new canopy. We also were given some trick captain chairs for the front seats. The final interior adjustment was reconditioning the Air Conditioner. After all of this Karla has really been biting her lips about the money we have spent since Feb. on preparing Paco for this trip. I have dreamed of doing this since I first visited South America in 1968. Thanks for all of the encouragement from family and friends. I hope we can share this with you all on this site. Let the adventure begin.
