SINGAPORE - Saturday 28th October - Tuesday 31st October (Day 1-4)

Hoped for an uneventful 12 hour plane journey to Singapore which Gill had prepared for by swallowing a number of pills. However, had a bit of a false start when the truck pushing the plane backwards so it could taxi for takeoff got stuck in first gear. It couldn't be unattached from the plane and we had to wait for engineers to arrive who discovered it had ran out of oil. Gill was starting to get a bit nervous. We ended up sitting on the plane for 2 hours before being able to take off!!

Anway, finally arrived in a hot and humid Singapore on Sunday afternoon, local time. We were both a bit tired but didn't seem to be suffering from any jet lag. First impressions were, as everyone who has visited Singapore says; very clean, amazingly efficient airport/transport system. We had booked 3 nights at the Shangri-la hotel, voted in 2005 by Daily Telegraph readers as the best in the world. I would say 5 star didn't do it justice. It was stunning. We had a room in the exclusive Valley Wing, complimentary champagne, wine etc all day! Glad I packed the smart clothing.

Over the next couple of days we hit the usual tourist trail;

*Shopping down Orchard road, where I bought a digital camera. (Mahesh FYI - went for a more practical Canon IXUS 850 IS in the end. Karl FYI - about 15-20% cheaper than the cheapest UK internet deal).

*Went on a self-guided walk around the Colonial area of Singapore (Lonely Planet Guidebbook). Was expecting to see an imaculate Singapore cricket club, but they were putting stands up on the outfield for a rugby sevens tournament! Did think that I would have a problem with the humidity playing cricket in Singapore!

*Visited Raffles Hotel, had a Singapore Sling in the Long Bar (where it was invented) then followed that up with tea in the Bar & Billiard room.

*Finally went on a night time bumboat ride on the Singapore river, all the boats were adorned with red lanterns, making it a very pretty sight.

All in all we both thoroughly enjoyed our short stay in Singapore.
