97 Fusion in South Africa

Kathy travel blog
Welcome to the travel journal of 97 Fusion---a U12 girls travel soccer team from Northern Virginia.

We are about to embark on one of the most amazing adventures of our lives: a 10-day trip to South Africa, the home of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Our adventure started in October 2009, when our intrepid coach, Stacey King, suggested that we submit a video for South African Tourism's Diski Dance competition.

What is Diski? Diski is the way that South Africans play soccer---it's a rhythmic and sometimes showy way of playing. In Diski, every move has a name and the names come from different South African native languages: Tswana, Zulu, Sotho and even English. The moves have names like Tsamaya", "Heel Extension Mkhari" and "Chester" to name a few. Add some rhythmic music, and you have the Diski Dance.

We spent weeks practicing our Diski, and then filmed our dance in Washington D.C. on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and on the National Mall, and throughout Northern Virginia. Then we submitted our video, and waited to hear the results. When we found out in January that we had won, we couldn't believe it----and neither could our parents!

South African Tourism has planned exciting week for us, and we invite you to follow our journey as we begin to explore South Africa and its many wonders.
