Sharon & Jon travel blog
These entries tell of our travel adventures for 2016 – our twelfth year.

We completed our four-month volunteer stay in Bosque del Apache NWR in New Mexico on March 4 and returned to the Pacific Northwest. Our time there was a whirlwind of catching up with friends and family and, of course, the annual visits to doctors and dentist.

In mid-June, we left Olympia to spend a few days visiting relatives in northern Idaho and then started our extended journey to Wisconsin to visit with Jon’s extended family and to explore parts of that state that neither of us had visited before. Our route took us through southern Idaho with a stop at Craters of the Moon National Park, then north a bit to Yellowstone National Park.

As we crossed the Great Plains, we stopped at various wildlife refuges, nineteenth century forts, and the Hubbell Mansion (now the Iowa governor’s mansion) in Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to our family visits, our stay in Wisconsin also included a time with a pastor friend whom we knew from Olympia and a week in Door County on the “thumb.”

Jon’s recurring back problems reached a point where it became necessary to return to Washington to consult with a neurosurgeon who determined that surgery was necessary. Surgery was performed successfully on December 5 and recovery extended through Christmas and New Year.
